We were told it’d be a good idea to take a Child Birth Preparation class. So we signed up for one at the hospital where Kelly would be delivering. It also included a tour of the Maternity Unit, so we got to see where she would deliver, and then where she would recover and spend the few days at the hospital. The hospital is really nice and we were actually really happy with the Maternity Unit. So it at least takes away some of the anticipation/anxiety of where we need to go and what we need to do once the big day comes.
As for the class? Well, it was……interesting? I guess that would be a good word. They showed a lot of videos. I mean, we expected some breasts, but we saw A LOT of breasts. Obviously other female parts too. I mean, we all know where babies come from, so it’s only to be expected that a Child Birth Prep class would show you that. The teacher said the videos “weren’t anything too crazy” and that they were “PG rated.” The videos were NOT PG rated. So after all the breasts, I guess we feel as prepared as possible.
We did some exercises that showed Kelly how to deal with some of the pain and how to move around, and different positions to sit and stand in. We did some breathing exercises too. Overall, I’m glad we did it and it was a good experience for us. I don’t feel like any class is really going to “prepare” us. I’m sure we’ll still freak out when it happens, I’m sure we’ll rush to the hospital prematurely only to be sent home because it’s too soon. But one thing I do know for sure, we are now a lot more terrified than we were before the class.
The next class we’ll be taking is a Breastfeeding class. Yeah, probably won’t see any breasts in that one.
